Well, I do want to see if any help is needed in preparation of the Mother's visit. I think that to be of primary importance, given the circumstances. Don't you agree?

...what kind of help would that be?

Honestly, I'm not terribly sure. I've asked Derrica. It doesn't seem right to do nothing at all, but perhaps I'm reverting back to how we used to make ready for one of our aunts to come and stay. The feeling is somewhat the same.

Are we talking… public demonstrations of faith? Or putting out the good silverware?

Do you have any aunts?

Only an unmarried uncle, I’m afraid.

I can tell. Well, in my experience, they usually care about the good silverware, and tasteful demonstrations of faith. Nothing too showy. We don't like showy.

--well what counts as tasteful? Shall we hold a mass?

[She laughs.]

No, we should not. We should set a lovely table, find whatever fresh flowers can be found this time of year, stock up on good tea and sweet-but-not-too-sweet biscuits, and embroider a tablecloth. Are you good at any of those?

I'm sorry to say my embroidery has gone to shit in recent years. [and it was so flawless, too]

...I'll see what I can do about the biscuits, though. I have my uses.

Poor man. It's hard, getting old, isn't it?

[Teasing! She'd wink at him if they were together to prove it, but, alas, he'll have to get it from her tone for now.]

Are you a biscuit-baker or a biscuit-purchaser?

[He laughs, and were she not a Seeker, he'd probably tell her to fuck off (in the affectionate way)-- but for now, there's business to attend to. Biscuit business.]

Purchaser. I don't think anyone would want to see what happens if I try baking.

That's all right. There's real strength in knowing your limitations, and old aunts generally tend to like biscuits that have been bought nearly as much as they like home-baked ones. As long as you're properly humble when presenting them.
